CB Arts Association hosts a sculptural exhibition

The Cannon Beach Arts Association is pleased to present a sculptural exhibition. Located at the Cannon Beach Gallery at 1064 South Hemlock St., the exhibit takes place 11 – 4 p.m. Wed., Aug. 26 - Sept. 27. Featuring work by Carol Lebreton, Randy McClelland, Greg Wilbur, and Scott Johnson.

Artist Carol Lebreton creates dynamic work that seeks to balance the practical with the aesthetic. Lebreton’s work is made of porcelain, oxides, and granite grit. When the work is moved, the hollow sculpture emanates sound.

Born and educated in Oregon, Greg Wilbur is known for hammering/raising metal into sculptural and vessel forms. Using a technique like hand building, he hammers flat sheets of copper, brass, pewter, and silver into closed sculptural forms.

Randy McClelland was first introduced to clay in 1984, while attending the American School in Japan. While abroad he was exposed to Japan’s fondness with ceramics and its cultural aesthetic. McClalland uses local materials in his clay bodies and surface glazes. The result being one of a kind wood fired ceramics.

Cannon Beach Art Association’s 18th annual Summer Art Program set to be at home

…The Cannon Beach Arts Association (CBAA) is adapting its 2020 Summer Art Camp. The Association’s first priority is to support the wellness of campers, their families and CBAA staff and volunteers in the greater community, while also bringing hope and creativity to this year’s festivities.

In response to safety considerations regarding the COVID-19 pandemic via the CDC, ACA, and Oregon Governor Health Authority state requirements released May 15 for day-camps, the Association will not be able to host camp in-person for 2020.

Instead of canceling however, the Association is bringing this year's Summer Art Camp home August 2020. Please save the date for CBAA’s At-Home-Camp August 3-7…

Johnson named director of Gallery and arts association

…The Cannon Beach Gallery and Arts Association recently selected Scott C. Johnson as its new director.

After serving as the association’s interim director for the past few months, Johnson said he took over after the former director, Cara Mico, left the position.

Johnson has lived in Cannon Beach for 30 years and shown his art at the White Bird Gallery for more than 25 years, he said…

Arts and music storm Cannon Beach

Platinum recording artists Marv and Rindy Ross, founders of the successful 1980s rock group Quarterflash, will headline the musical performances at Cannon Beach’s 32nd annual Stormy Weather Arts Festival, Nov. 1-3.

The pair will be joined in concert by Portland indie roots rocker Jon Koonce to celebrate the release of their new CD “New American Blues.”

Other musical performers during the festival include folk super-group The Portlanders, who bring a combined 200 years of experience to their Friday evening concert.

Also performing is 1920s and ’30s-style Delta Bluesman Steve Cheseborough, who is featured on Sunday during an event titled Brews, Blues & Barbecue. On Saturday of the festival, visitors can wander from gallery to gallery, enjoying live music with regional musicians at indoor and outdoor venues throughout the town as they go.

In addition to special events throughout the weekend in the galleries, the Stormy Weather Arts Festival includes the "Dancing in the Rain," fashion show featuring apparel by popular designers.

Coast Community Radio- Summer Art Camp 2019

ARTS Live & Local!

I want to call your attention an amazing job done by our very talented and dedicated Art Camp Director and Assistant.  Yesterday, Meagan and Drea (Andrea Suarez) represented CBAA on Carol Newman’s radio show in the best possible way.  These two women brought attention to the fantastic Art Camp program and the nuances around our latest push to be more environmentally aware and socially inclusive as an organization in general and in our specific program offerings.  They were the highlight of Carol’s show.  In fact, later yesterday evening and likely a direct result of the broadcast, Meagan saw a spike in online registrations as two more classes filled up for the Summer.  We should all be very proud of this exceptional team!

School’s out, but art classes are in on the Coast

School’s out, but here on the Coast, classes are just beginning, and they’re not just for kids.

The Cannon Beach Arts Association has opened registration for its 17th Annual Art Camp, July 8-12. Five-day classes for the younger set include yoga (ages 4-12), 3D mask-making (8-12) and for the really wee ones — ages 3-5 — “Mini Makers.” The brochure describes the class as a “happy happening” for young and aspiring artists, who will draw, paint, create collages, and just plain play.

Adult Art Camp offers three classes including “Watercolor by the Sea,” an introductory class in which artists will create a watercolor inspired by Cannon Beach and learn tips and tricks about painting with watercolors. It’s open to all levels, but designed for beginners.

Coast Weekend- Art day in Seaside

…In 2015, an eighth-grader from Seaside School District compelled legislators to sponsor a bill designating April 14 as Honorary Artists of Oregon Day. Seaside High School celebrated the following year by inviting regional artists to lead workshops for all students.

Four years later, the school is one of several in the area honoring artists, thanks to the efforts of founder and now-senior Hayley Rollins and other Seaside students.

“We’ve been working on trying to make it bigger this year by talking to other schools along the coast,” Rollins said.

As stated in Oregon Bill 3042, sponsored by retired state Rep. Deborah Boone and state Sen. Betsy Johnson, the purpose of Art Day is “to celebrate art and artists, to promote art education in this state and to encourage engagement in artistic endeavors.”…

Cannon Beach Gazette- Message in a (water) bottle

…In the words of regional artist Pooka Rice, “art is the best way to facilitate messages.”

During a Feb. 22 workshop, she showed a handful of participants what that means by demonstrating how to integrate bits of recycled beach plastic into a collection of attractive paintings that communicated a strong message of ocean stewardship and environmental protection — “art that tells a story,” as Rice put it.

The workshop, held at the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum, was offered as part of the Haystack Rock Awareness Programand Cannon Beach Arts Association’s collaborative Environmental Art Series: Trash Talk Art Workshops…

Oregon Artswatch- Cannon Beach classes turn litter into learning

…In Cannon Beach, they’re taking it one step further with Trash Talks, a nine-part series of classes that guide participants in transforming beach trash into art. The series is presented by the Cannon Beach Arts Association and Haystack Rock Awareness Program and supported by a grant from the Oregon Coast Visitors Association.

A workshop in December turned plastics collected on the beach into holiday ornaments.

“The idea of the classes is to get people to reframe the way they think about beach trash,” said Meagan Sokol, arts education director for the arts association. She noted that besides the visual blight, trash can be deadly to seabirds, which are attracted by bright colors and often ingest it with deadly consequences. She added that the program is trying to get people to think about that, “to think, I can pick this up and do something with it. I can be a beach steward by cleaning up.”…

Cannon Beach Gazette- Arts Association among cultural award winners

…Meagan Sokol of the arts association represented the group at the event. Founded in 1987, the association presents gallery exhibitions, workshops and classes for adults and children. “With this we’ll be able to start connecting with our local academy,” Sokol said, referring to the Cannon Beach Academy, now in its second year…

Coast Weekend- Young at Art

…This year will also feature work from an entirely new group of artists — about 33 to be exact, who may or may not even realize they are artists yet.

Cannon Beach Academy students have made a collective piece of artwork out of marine debris to be shown at Sandpiper Square. The project was facilitated through the Haystack Rock Awareness Program’s “Trash Talk” — a program that turns microplastics into jewelry and art as a fundraiser for the environmental stewardship program — and the Cannon Beach Arts Association.

Participating in Stormy Weather serves a dual purpose for the academy Parent Teacher Organization volunteer Shelley Parker said.

“It’s a traditional Cannon Beach event. We wanted to do something educational, showcase what we’re doing with the kids and show they are an important part of the community as well,” Parker said.

When Parker reached out to the association’s Arts Education Director Meagan Sokol about expanding art opportunities within the new charter school, Sokol saw partnering with HRAP as a cost-effective and educational way to do so.

“It’s perfect for Stormy Weather because this project has everything to do with the beach,” HRAP Outreach Coordinator Pooka Rice said. “By doing this (the kids) are capable of bringing these lessons home to their families.”…

Cannon Beach Gazette- Medium Cool

…Down in the basement, teenagers rolled clay in their hands until their fingers were dyed a rainbow of colors in preparation to make stop motion videos with clay figurines.

These activities were the start to a week long visual arts camp hosted by the Cannon Beach Arts Association. In its 16th year, about 100 kids and adults from all across the North Coast signed up to take a variety of painting, crafting and movement classes.

“This is something I look forward to all year,” arts education director Meagan Sokol said. “Just seeing these kids blossom at the end of the week in incredible. I see how they are transformed by art.”…
