WORKSHOPS

The Cannon Beach Arts Association offers welcoming, affordable, and varied classes and events for all skill levels. Classes are open to beginners through working artists. Most workshops are for ages 18+ sessions marked "Kid/family friendly" are suitable for younger participants.

Register online, by phone (Gallery hours: 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) at (503) 436-0744, or in person at Cannon Beach Arts Gallery, 1064 S. Hemlock, Cannon Beach, OR. Phone and online registration must be completed at least 48 hours before a workshop begins.

Attendance and cancellations: Workshops require a minimum of four students. Register early to help prevent cancellations; if a workshop is cancelled, registered participants will be notified in advance.

Wait list: If a workshop is full, you may request to be added to the wait list by calling the Gallery or emailing kim@cannonbeacharts.org. Wait-list placement does not guarantee a spot. If a spot opens, we will contact you to confirm; you will be notified at least 48 hours before the workshop.

Kurinuki Pottery Workshop with Michelle Valigura
Discover the ancient art of kurinuki, a Japanese pottery technique where vessels are hand-carved and hollowed from a single solid block of clay. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to shape, carve, and refine your own unique piece.

Finished works will be fired and glazed, and students may pick up their pieces 4–6 weeks after the class. For added convenience, optional shipping is available for those who are unable to pick-up in person.

Instructor Bio:
Michelle Valigura is a sculptor, with a primary focus on ceramics. her background designing for stop motion animation (including elf, and the simpsons) and her love of mid-century design have built a foundation that allows her to work in multiple mediums. She has licensed her characters to disneyland, kidrobot, paradise toys and other art brands, eventually forming her own design company switcheroo. In 2019 michelle moved back to her roots in the pacific northwest where she opened basalt, which functions both as a studio and showroom in downtown cannon beach. She has exhibited her work, lectured and taught workshops at galleries, museums and universities worldwide.

The Art of Fall Botanicals: Ink & Watercolor Workshop

Celebrate the season’s rich colors and patterns in this hands-on workshop with botanical artist Dorota. Learn how to blend loose, expressive watercolor washes with detailed ink work while painting fall botanicals from life. Together, we’ll practice observation skills and explore the structure, form, and beauty of plants in autumn.

Materials will be provided—you are welcome to bring your own personal materials if preferred!

Instructor Bio:
Dorota is a trained botanical illustrator with a diploma from the Society of Botanical Artists in the UK. She has taught at the Oregon Society of Artists, North Carolina Botanical Garden, and Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. Her work highlights the beauty and fragility of plants, and she is the author of five botanical coloring books, including one for Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden.

Join Linda as she encourages you to create your own small watercolor painting. She will share her techniques working with the sea, rocks, trees and the coastal landscape. All levels are welcome to spend the afternoon exploring your talents as an artist!

 

Creating with wool Intro to needle felting

Instructor: Glenna Gray

This three hour class will introduce you to the basics of needle felting, from materials and technique to the history of the art. You will go home with a finished pumpkin or jack-o-lantern just in time for Halloween, and the skills to create anything your imagination desires!

Wool shares the structural characteristics of clay and the color blending properties of paint. And it is soft! Glenna Gray went to Scotland to study with Moy Mackay to learn more about this versatile medium. Moy Mackay is an award winning felt artist who developed a unique coupling of a traditional craft within a fine art.

SMART PHONE PHOTOGRAPHY

Improving your Smart Phone Photography workshop! Join us April 6th from 10 - 12:30pm to learn how to make the most of your smart phone Camera. Instructor Bob Kroll will teach students how to adjust focus, exposure, improve composition, edit photos, and introduce different photography and editing apps.

INTRO TO JEWELRY MAKING

Instructor: Jen Hoff

Want to learn the basic tools and techniques for foundational jewelry making (or repair)? Come take an introductory class with Jen Hoff! Jen started making jewelry in 2000 and has sold her work in high-end boutiques and galleries in Austin, Breckenridge, and now Cannon Beach. Her designs are fresh, joyful, and use high quality materials. She does not use soldering for her work so come learn the basics and have some fun! In this class, you will design and create your own pair of earrings and a bracelet. There is a material fee for the components you will use in your creations.

This class will be held on March 9, 2024 at 10:00-12:30pm at Cannon Beach History Center and will cost $35 for members and $45 for non-members. Seating is limited to 10 artists.

Intro to Watercolors

If you have a desire to create your own masterpiece, join Linda Gebhart, a Northwest coast artist, as she walks you through an introductory watercolor adventure.  Create your own version of Cannon Beach, Haystack Rock, clouds, waves, birds and sand!

Linda, a former math teacher, retired to Cannon Beach in 2014 with a fervent desire to artistically represent the beauty she discovered during her world travels.  She quickly discovered her biggest passion was in painting the seascapes and landscapes surrounding her on the coast.  Linda recently served as the board President of Cannon Beach Art Association and is on the board of Trail’s End Art Gallery in Gearhart.  She is grateful for the many artists who continue to inspire her. Additionally, she volunteers at Cannon Beach Library.

Participants in her workshop will learn a few watercolor basics and take away a finished piece of art suitable for framing!  This class will be held on Nov 5, 2023 at 10:30-12:30pm at Cannon Beach History Center and will cost $35 for members and $45 for non-members. Seating is limited to 8 artists.
