Fisher Poets Gathering @ CBAA

Astoria Fisher Poets
Join us for the last reading of the well-known Astoria Fisher Poets Gathering. On Sunday Feb 25th at 4:00, CBAA will host the final reading, bringing together talented poets who will share songs and poetry inspired by fishing and maritime communities.

The gathering is a powerful and memorable experience, highlighting the impact of storytelling and the bond between humanity and sea. Save the date and get ready to be swept away by the beauty and raw emotion of the Fisher Poets.

Established in 1998

A celebration of the commercial fishing industry in poetry, prose and song, the FisherPoets Gathering has attracted fisherpoets and their many fans to Astoria, Oregon the last weekend of February since 1998.

Originally conceived as a modest cultural reunion for far-flung friends in the commercial fishing fleet, the FisherPoets Gathering now attracts nearly a hundred poets, songwriters and storytellers from both the west and east coasts’ commercial fishing communities. They gather in Astoria’s pubs, restaurants and galleries to read for each other and for the hundreds of fisherpoetry fans who come to hear the authentic, creative voices of deckhands and skippers, cannery workers and shipwrights, young greenhorns and old timers, strong women and good-looking men.

The FisherPoets Gathering has been featured in media both national and international from the NY Times, Smithsonian magazine, the Wall Street Journal, NBC to the BBC and others.  The U.S. Library of Congress has recognized the FisherPoets Gathering as a “Local Legacy” project and the event has spawned a genre, “fisherpoetry,” that fans of occupational poetry might hear in towns like Kodiak, AK, New Bedford, MA, Port Townsend, WA and Camden, ME.

QUILTED TOGETHER

Quilting has a storied history, steeped in tradition and cultural significance. Dating back centuries, it has been a means of preserving stories, narratives, and memories. The careful selection of fabric, the meticulous cutting, the precise stitching, and the artful arrangement of colors and patterns all work together to create a masterpiece that speaks volumes about its creator.

In the realm of fine art, quilts have become increasingly recognized and celebrated for their artistic merit. Modern quilters, drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as nature, architecture, and even abstract concepts, continue to push boundaries and challenge our perceptions of what quilting can be.

Be prepared to be captivated by the craftsmanship, creativity, and sheer beauty emanating from the quilts of Becky deVries-Wong, Ken Fox, Joshua Pickens, Laurie Caplan, Patti McGregor, and Chris Pavlock.

DEMONSTRATION: Jan 19th, starting at 4:30pm, During the Opening Reception.

In the world of quilting there are a wide variety of techniques used to create the many styles of quilts that are only limited by your imagination. Becky, will be demonstrating a few of the hand techniques that have been used in vintage quilts and are gaining popularity again.  She will have a few samples of each technique to view as well as showing you how they are created.

English Paper Piecing : Sometimes referred to asd EPP, is a form of quilt making that uses paper templates to wrap fabric around and hand sew into a mosaic style of design. It's a great method for fussy cutting fabric and highlighting a motif or design from fabric.

Stamped Quilt Piecing: Rubber stamps to provide more precision to making your quilt templates. Rubber stamp templates have both a cutting and a sewing line for accuracy . Most sewn together by hand. Some do use machines to sew some together. Similar to EPP, but no paper needed.

Hand Applique : Applique is ornamental needlework in which pieces or patches of fabric are sewn onto a larger background fabric to create a picture or design.  Creating motifs and designs from layers of fabric.  There are many ways to produce applique by hand or machine depending on the desired effect.

Broderie Perse: Popular in the late 18th century it is French for Persian Embroidery. A technique where elements , such as flowers, birds, animals....are cut from fabric and applique onto another background.
