Mark Andres: 22 October – 27 November

Reception: Saturday, 22 October, 6-8pm

For nearly 30 years, Mark Andres painted and drew what he terms “observational paintings from the landscape and the model,” characterized by an unerring color sense and impeccable compositions. More recently, though, Andres has been combining imagery in paintings that suggest a narrative flow, although not a linear one, because, as he notes, past, present, and future often collide in these works. Andres, who studied at the Art Institute of Boston and the University of Massachusetts, has taught at Portland Community College since 1991.

“From Life”: 27 February – 26 March

“From Life” is one the the Cannon Beach Gallery open submission juried shows. The show links into Clatsop Community College’s “Au Naturel” show. Submissions were invited for artwork, which draw on observational drawing, painting. The theme was interpreted freely, but focuses on representations of the body or portraiture, or a document human life.

The show will also features “Hanford Reach” by Henk Pander, who was the juror for this exhibition. The Dutch artist Henk Pander arrived in Portland in 1965 and, except for brief periods, has lived there ever since, creating works that challenge status quo modern art of the Pacific Northwest. Henk Pander’s works are in many collections, including those of the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), Museum Henriette Polak (Zutphen, The Netherlands), City of Amsterdam, City of Portland, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena), Portland Art Museum, Frye Art Museum (Seattle), Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (University of Oregon), and Hallie Ford Museum of Art (Willamette University), where a fifty-year retrospective exhibition of his work was shown in 2011. His public commissions are at Oregon State University, Oregon Public Safety Academy (Salem), Portland Center for the Visual Arts, and numerous other locations.
